Guess you're wondering ...what's so special about a flag?.... well I'm here to show you it's importance...enjoy the ride๐๐
The Nigerian flag is the symbol of freedom and identity, it is a national signal. In Nigeria, after the fusing of the Southern and Northern protectorate the Governor General Sir Lord Frederick Lugard chose an emblem to appear on the colonial flag(The Union Jack) which had such features as a red disk on which was placed a green six-pointed star known as the Seal of Solomon, the royal crown (of England) and the name “Nigeria” was placed within the star.
The Colonial Flag
Howbeit, in 1959, just before the declaration of the Independence of Nigeria, a committee was setup in order to hold a competition with the sole aim of getting a unique national flag for the country that was to be birthed. The competition saw 3000 participants sending in their entries among whom was Mr.Taiwo Micheal Akinkunmi a 23year old engineering student of Norwich Technical College London in England. The then High commissioner of Nigeria to the united kingdom sir M.A Martin's was drawn to the work, he moved a motion for the ensign to be adopted and indeed it was judged to be the best.
The flag, unlike the other entries which had symbols of tribalism and personal intentions embedded in them than a national one was chosen according to the committee because of what it represented "peace and unity" of course having come from different ethnic groups with peculiar belief systems, peace and unity was what the nation would need to grow. The flag had equal proportional colours of green and white stripes with a blazing red sun on the white part.
The Nigerian flag is not just a piece of cloth, nor is it just a means of identification but it is a symbol of the country that projects what the nation stands for and must be held as such.
The Nigerian flag is ceremoniously hoisted at 6am everyday and lowered at sunset
The Nigerian flag, is to be hoisted first, high above every other flag and lowered last because it is not in subjection to any nation.
It should be flown at half-staff in the case of national mourning or funeral
The burning of the national flag is mostly a sign of protest and is seen as a national crime, but then it's lawful to burn or dispose the flag in a ceremonial manner if it gets burnt or torn.
what do you think of the Nigerian flag when you see it? Do you think it's worth saving?
